SpaceX reaches orbit with Falcon 1 - Flight 4 (full video including Elon Musk statement)

SpaceX is the only private company to ever reach earth orbit with their Falcon 1 rocket. This is the FULL 40 minute webcast from about T-10 minutes until well after SECO. We didn't want to cut out the chorus of cheering after the SpaceX crew realized that they had just made history! While Scaled Composites did reach space twice and thus winning the Ansari X PRIZE, they did not actually reach orbit. The Falcon 1 with its simulated payload is the first private vehicle to reach orbit on Sunday September 28th, 2008 at 23:31 UTC. Space flight forever changed today

Negative! It was civilian and not space LEO. SpaceX was first private to space LEO.pointmanzero
Well, SpaceX never said that theirs is the first to reach space, but they say (and are correct to say) that theirs is the first to reach orbit.retrogamer500
ok i guess that counts. So Pegasus was the first air launched, and CSXT was the first ground launched. However CSXT did not orbit a full rotation of the earth. It went up, and it came back down just a few miles away. It looks as if this project here made a full orbit or more around earth, thus making it the first privately developed vehicle to make 1 or more full rotations within Earths orbit.Mysticlambo
Sorry, can't read. But it's launched from an aircraft that takes off from the ground, so consider that to be a reusable first stage. So it sort of counts.PlatoCantRepent
I believe you mean Orbital Sciences Pegasus in 1990.PlatoCantRepent
@Mysticlambo that was low earths orbit, this is normal orbit (higher) :)Doviux09
good job, but i must correct, This IS NOT the first privately developed vehicle to reach space from the Ground. CSXT was in 2004.Mysticlambo
congrats, public cos..silanath
Man that was intense..... l wonder what NASA and the military are thinking? Hhhmmm,.... is disclosure coming?TRASUPO
"Designed from the ground up" , pardon the pun . Very well done .BarefootBASE
Outstanding work. Outstanding.putittogether
Great job guys !!!Daymack
dear propulsion teams out there, could a engine that collects background radiation and electromagnetic energy become real.i see in my minds eye this would be the way forward.time and any speed we would care to reach could realised may be.but i dont think i would like to be the test pilot.seanmillerr
yeah just give up on life then cause of some no evidence conspiracy theory there gay boobs right? go hide in a cave and spare the rest of us from your weakness.derangius
Future of space exploration = Private Companies. SpaceX is HP of space industry. G8 vid. 5*. Encouragement 2 GenX.hobgoblin1216

Spirit of American enterprise... melting pot, whatever. In the best American tradition anyway! I'm sure even Canadians are welcome to put up great companies.fi08680
It's not "quite routine" to have a spacecraft designed for a specific launch vehicle ending up being too sensitive to vibrations produced by that same vehicle. Someone screwed up on this - either the satellite wasn't designed right for the dynamic environment of the LV or the environment was more severe than the predicted in the Payload Planners Guide, but it is NOT quite routine. Luckily, the rocket has performance to spare for this payload so they were able to install a vibration dampener.ugowar
It has to do with properly securing the payload for vibrations etc. If you want to know more do a google search. This sort of thing is quite routine..sirachman
i could shoot a pen higher with a magnet. no kidding.Vleesball
Yeah, right........except for all the Americans that are actually doing all the designing and work!angels4acure
