| This is one of the few books I liked the ending of, I hate most endings, but I loved the ending of this book. It's up to the reader to decide if it is "unsatisfying" because it depends on what is going to satisfy you in a book, which differs from person to person. | FancyNewAmie |
| ROTFLMAO @ the end of the video | FreeHugsHugger |
| hahaha well, thats your opinion i loved the ending | fmableachdbz |
| but i wanted to meet jane! i dunno. i see what you mean, but i dont think the ending could have gotten all that much worse than it already was. | showersinger34 |
| "jane should have come back" Dude, this isn't a freakin soap opera that would've been a cliche "phony" piece of crap ending | fmableachdbz |
| OMG my good im speechles cuz ur just gave me ideas tht i wont plagirize or anything but.. wel definetly try and explain 2 my class the ideas the compare and contrst of the whole crticial thinking u just had was amazing BRAVO! w0w ur amazin my friend.. | kisame426 |
| Same here. When I first began this book, I was loving it. But the end just didn't do it for me. Most unsatisfying ending ever. But I'm glad I read it. Now I've got just a bit more culture in me. :0) | SunnySideUp1518 |
| i have an exam tomorrow on catcher in the rye, THANK YOU for all this insight! i think i might just pass =D | thebestatlife |
| john, i'm sorry. you keep saying how something makes us care. well, this book didn't make me care at all. there was nothing heatbrakingly sad about it. it was just annoying. maybe in 10 years i'll read it at a normal pace and on my own time instead of a chapter a night at 11:30. still, i just did not like this book at all. jane should have come back | showersinger34 |
| I read the book because my english teacher made me, and when I read about anger I get more and more angry so by the end of the book I hated Holden more than I have hated any book character before. | eizhowa |
| is anyone else counting how many times john blinks in his videos? | SacredOreo |
| Catcher in the rye hit me hard from the word go, I couldnt put it down. I guess I just love when the characters in the book just speak to you. And I also agree highly with holdens romantic stance and I love how crazy cynical he is about EVERYTHING! its an amazing book and analysing and rereading makes it that much better | CelesteLovesYou |
| I liked this much more than the first video. | leconciergeus |
| hey is that theme song from an actually song it sounds familiar | thebush50 |
| ok so I only read the book for the first time when I was 22 a few months back, and really hated the whingy tone of it all, and never understood why it seemingly gets referenced all the frigging time in various tv/newspaper slots. I was sent a link here by someone trying to persuade me of my "wrongness". I still think not reading it when I was exactly 16 1/4 was a critical mistake, but I enjoyed the analysis. I'm sure I've missed the point of it, now being thoroughly cynical, but oh well. | Francois4Rabelais |
| would you be my english teacher please | mynameisbob33 |
| I realize this comment will most definately be very similar to many other comments already posted to this video, but I feel it's important that I thank you, John, for helping me understand this book. When I studied it in school, we didn't really analyze it very much and everyone had the mindframe that "many people before us have hated this book" and so I think my class failed to comprehend the deeper message. Thank you, John. I'll be rereading Catcher in the Rye as soon as I have time. ♥ | MusicIsFreedom42 |
| i totally agree john, i really don't think i would have understood or appreciated this book if i hadn't 'done all that english stuff'. I studied it in class this year and it's now one of my favourite books, even though i wasn't sure about it before. and nice way of putting the two Holden's thing, I had never thought about it that way before :) | alithejewishfreak |
| its said you should read this book three times, as a child when your place doesn't matter, as a young adult when you try to find your place, and as an adult when you have found a place and you can no longer understand people without one. man, i need time off :( | jethroalias97 |
| a thousand soldiers dead is a statistic, a single soldier dead is a tragedy. concrete examples make it poignant i suppose. Also, Despite the fact that catcher in the rye's is considered a tribute to the disenfranchised masses, i didn't find it that sad... i suppose i associate sadness with trying very hard and failing, it seemed to me colden had a vacation, but perhaps i'm biased. | jethroalias97 |
| I never really understood what this scavender hunting was. anyone who cares to explain? :) | BellaLovesVoldie |
| I really liked the Catcher in the Rye. And I liked being able to understand more of the symbolism than I understood just on my own. | MeiDecay |
| yeha, like when hes totally alone,he dosent know where to go,and maybe, its also about when youre in a complicated situation(frozen lake) do you need someone to help you to get out(guys who take the ducks away)or not,you do it your self(ducks just fly away somewhere).thanks for replying:) | carolin988 |
| He actually doesn't mean when it's literally cold, he means when holden doesn't have any place to go anymore. | ratherconfused |
| ohh thanks a lot! | carolin988 |
