Moksha, Enlightenment is earned, not given or begged for, unlike Heaven. That's the essential differnece between the two. Getting to heaven is not that difficult, all a pedophile or a terrorist needs to do is to beg like a dog. He gets to enjoy heaven while his living victims live thru hell. Moksha is earned thru knowledge, and knowledge has to be earned, not given. A Teacher who gives pass marks to a failed student is not doing him a favor. I think parents should stress more on explaining the meaning of Gita than making their kids memorize the shloks. I memorized the shloks when I was a kid, the whole 12th, 15th, and 6th chapter. But I didn't know the meaning of all of them. Memorization of sanskrit shloks is good, it improves ur memory but more important is to understand and follow the meaning of Gita.	swapte

I agree that any parent that forces their children to memorise is not very parental. At the same time, we should still teach the values of the Gita to our children: it speaks not only of religiousness, but of harmony with others and respecting all living entities as part and parcel of the Supreme Being, Lord Krishna. To teach a child that Lord Krishna, who is also known as Abha, Waheguru, Allah and Jehovah, is not a crime. However, if a child *wants* to learn and memorise Sanskrit, let it be.	sirach

According to Vedic tradition the child should memorize at an early age because the childs brain is like a spunge. I disagree when you state its a crime to introduce to children the concept of God. Who decides whats a crime or not? Many adults cannot fathom the understanding of God either, so its not a question of age but proper education. First we have to understand who God is, then we can speak. To talk about the gita and to recite is one thing but to understand it is another. I know many who understand gita and teach it to their children, that is not a crime at all.	haridham
First we have to understand the difference between religion and spirituality. Spirituality is the inherint nature of the soul. There are many who are not qualified to teach it yet there are also many who are qualified to teach it. Vedic culture is based on guru sadhu and sastra, reading and reciting the gita is one thing but understanding it through a bonafide parampara through a bonafide sampradaya is another thing. When those who've never known lack of belief face it, they don't know what to do with it, how to treat it. Therefore they call it "a type of belief". That's not true.
